July 30, 2008 Worthy Brother Knights, I want to first congratulate the incoming officers and their families for taking on a difficult task of helping to organize your council for the next fraternal year. I hope that each council this year makes star council and that they truly progress in a positive manner. Each chairman, director and officer has his hands full and I would like to extend an offer to each member of his council; that is, get out there and help these guys. You find the work isn't so bad - in fact it will be fun and rewarding to yourself, the grand knight, your council and those who are affected by your hard work. I would like to encourage those who are thinking about a position in the council, who doesn't know if they are able to fill the shoes of those who are all ready in an office. Take interest - get involved - see why those officers and chairmen enjoy what they do. Don't wait until the last minute, panic and decide that this isn't made for you. Now is the time to ask someone if they need help. Rest assured, they are not going to say "Thank you Lord Jesus!" and dump a mess onto your hands, rather you can work and learn at your own pace.
Now, next issue… get out there and recruit a new member! You now have the chance to earn a Shining Armour Award if you haven't all ready. Bring someone into the council and show them why we enjoy our organization. Show them the ropes on what we stand for. Invite them and their family to one of our socials or a project your council is currently working on. Tell them they are needed and wanted - make them feel at home. I would love to see in each council have at least 5 members in each meeting receive the special award you so deserve. Remember, if you are bored, upset with the ways things are or think the council isn't doing enough - then it's time YOU to get more active and involved with your council. Each man has a special talent and can be used to benefit your council. Even if you are home bound, you can do something! Get a phone list and start calling brother knights of upcoming activities or call other brother knights who might be sick or dying. Always remember to include the widows in all of the events that you do. Check on them, see if there is anything you or the council can do. Invite them to a social - offer to take them. The bottom line - care about your fellow members and their families. Care about your council! Fraternally yours, Tim Manning DD#35 |
